Newspapers Review: AL-Ayyam says Washington Waiting to See New Government Program

RAMALLAH, May 9, 2011 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Arabic daily, Al-Ayyam, said Monday in its top front page story that Washington will deal with the new Palestinian government based on its program and policies.

It quoted a US consulate spokesman as saying that any government that will be formed should accept international principles if it wants to play a role in the peace process. The US position is that it will evaluate the new government based on its policies, and it will then decide if it will continue with its assistance to the Palestinian people or not.

Other headlines in the dailies had to do with an Egyptian plan for prisoners exchange between Israel and Hamas, as came in Al-Quds, and the meeting on Sunday between President Mahmoud Abbas and members of J-Street, the liberal Jewish lobby in Washington, as reported in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida.

The papers also reported on the Fatah Central Council meeting in Ramallah on Sunday, a letter from the Russian foreign minister to Abbas, as well as the events in Syria.

The editorial in Al-Quds had to do with the reconciliation agreement calling for implementation of what was agreed on.

The op-ed pieces in Al-Ayyam discussed various subjects, including the reconciliation agreement.
