Fayyad: PA is Committed to Freedom of the Press

RAMALLAH, May 3, 2011 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Salam Fayyad Tuesday reiterated the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to freedom of the press and expression, calling on Palestinian journalists to work freely and not to practice self-censorship.

Addressing journalists at ceremonies organized by the Government Media Office held in Ramallah to distribute prizes to outstanding journalistic work during Freedom of Press Day, Fayyad said the PA supports freedom of expression and wants to reinforce it in a way that would make work easier for Palestinian journalists.

He said a draft journalism law has been prepared after extensive consultations, which will give more room for journalists to do their work.

Fayyad also said the government had decided two months ago to form the higher council for information, which is supposed to replace the ministry of information. Work is underway to complete it as soon as possible, he said.
