Nafha Prisoners Go on Hunger Strike

RAMALLAH, May 2, 2011 (WAFA)- Palestinian prisoners at Nafha, in the Naqab desert, said Monday that they have decided to go on a one-day hunger strike to protest ongoing inhumane treatment by the Israeli prison administration, according to study group.

The Prisoners’ Center for Studies said it received a letter from the prisoners saying the prison administration had repeatedly conducted unannounced searches during the week, which provoked the prisoners.

The letter also included details of how the prison administration aggravated one prisoner when a guard phoned his family. The prisoners objected to the searches and refused to allow one of the officers to enter the sections because of his acts. As a result the prison administration punished the prisoners by not allowing them to be in the committee that represents the prisoners.

The director of the center, Ra’afat Hamduna, called for immediate intervention by the International Red Cross to solve the issue of the prisoners and to pressure Israel to stop its measures against the prisoners, especially the strip searches, night raids and transferring prisoners from one prison to another.
