Israeli Ministry Backtracks from Controlling Curricula ?in East Jerusalem’s Schools

JERUSALEM, April 25, 2011 (WAFA) – Israeli Ministry of Education Monday backtracked from its previous resolution; to control and supervise the curricula taught in Palestinian and Arab schools in East Jerusalem.

The ministry stated that official and unofficial Palestinian and Arab schools can still teach the Palestinian curricula.

Al-Maqdesee for Social Development said that, “It received today the backtrack from the previous resolution approved in April 2011, and considered it an obvious retreat from its stance”.

It published the resolution's text and warned from its dangerous content which was received with heavy criticism from Jerusalem’s inhabitants.

The previous resolution stated that it is essential to only buy books printed by Israeli ministry of Education as an attempt to control the new curricula, cancel the Palestinian curricula and obliterate the Palestinian and Arab identity in the minds of Palestinian students.

Al-Maqdesee added in a statement that, “Israeli authority was put under official and unofficial pressure after announcing its last resolution to control East Jerusalem schools’ curricula and educational process”.

'The retreat came after one week of the Israeli ministry of education’s decision to display the Israeli ‘Independence Declaration’ in all East Jerusalem and 1948 areas’ schools”, it said.
