Israeli Settler Killed, Others Injured after Sneeking into Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus

NABLUS, April 24, 2011 (WAFA) - An Israeli settler was shot and killed while others were wounded on Sunday after a group of settlers snuck into Joseph’s Tomb near Nablus without security coordination with the Palestinians.

Adnan Al-Damiri, spokesman of the Palestinian security forces, said that an investigation will be conducted to reveal the facts and circumstances which led to the incident.

Nablus governor, Jibrin Al-Bakri, told WAFA that Palestinian policemen spotted Israeli cars at the site, and fired warning shots in the air.
Israeli soldiers at an army outpost overlooking the location also opened fire in the direction of the Tomb, said Palestinian sources, before a large Israeli army force had arrived at the scene.

Bakri said a Palestinian police vehicle present at the time of the shooting was seized by the Israeli forces.

Israeli soldiers sealed the area after the incident and did not allow Palestinian residents to leave or enter the area, said local sources.

They  raided several homes in the area, and  shot rubber bullets and tear gas at Palestinian youth near the tomb. One Palestinian was taken to hospital and several others suffered suffocation from the gas.

Joseph's Tomb is considered to be a holy site for both Muslims and Jews, but is under Palestinian control. Jewish worshippers are granted permission to enter the site after security coordination between the two sides.
However, Jewish extremists try to reach the site without prior coordination.
