Prisoners Go on 1-Day Hunger Strike against Solitary Confinement

RAMALLAH, April 6, 2011 (WAFA) –Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails declared a one day hunger strike Thursday in support of fellow prisoners held in solitary confinement, according to groups monitoring the situation in Israeli prisons.

The strikers are protesting the solitary confinement some of the longest serving prisoners have been subjected to, particularly that of Akram Mansour, the third-longest serving Palestinian prisoner, who also suffers from serious diseases.

They also are demanding better medical services for the prisoners as well as an end to the humiliating strip searches their families under go when visiting them.

There are over 6000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, distributed in more than 23 prisons and detention centers.

The prisoners also plan to  go on another hunger strike on “Prisoners’ Day”, on April 17.
