Palestinian Government to Resign

RAMALLAH, February, 14, 2011 (WAFA) – The Palestinian government is expected Monday to resign, according to official sources.

Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who has been prime minister since June 2007, is expected to submit his resignation to President Mahmoud Abbas later Monday.
Abbas is then going to ask Fayyad to form a new government and he will have three weeks to do that, which could be extended by two more weeks.

Director of the Government Media Center, Ghassan Khatib, said that the government will hold its weekly meeting Monday during which it will decide regarding its resignation.

After Abbas asks Fayyad to form a new government, the prime minister-designate will start consultation with Palestinian political parties to name his new cabinet.

The Palestinian Authority has called for local elections on July 9 and the Palestine Liberation Organization said Saturday that presidential and legislative elections will be held no later than September.

Hamas has rejected the two decisions.
