Palestine Commemorates Yasser Arafat

RAMALLAH, November 11, 2009 ( WAFA)- President Mahmoud Abbas warned Wednesday  of a moment that we would regret of our commitment to the international law and the Quartet Road Map.

President Abbas was addressing  a  memorial in honor of late President Yasser Arafat, commemorating the fifth anniversary of his passing. It was held in the Presidential HQ in Ramallah, where thousands came to attend from various parts of the West Bank. 

President Abbas, laid earlier a wreath of flowers on Arafat’s Tomb, told the audience “our current battle is to have an independent  state on the 1967 borders  with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

He said President Arafat will remain in the Palestinian memory, as symbol of steadfastness and perseverance on Palestinian inalienable rights

'The Palestinian children will one day raise the Palestinian flag over Jerusalem churches and minarets of mosques .” Abbas reminded of late president words. “We are committed to Yasser Arafat’s political agenda. We will not accept any solution that ignores our freedom, independence, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian State.”

“Today we come to remember our late President, our leader Yasser Arafat,” abbas said mentioning that Arafat in his last quarter of his journey did not lose hope, that “Palestine will one day be free and its capital will be Jerusalem.”

He reiterated that the Palestinians would not resume negotiations before Israel freezes all settlement activities, calling on the international community to force Israel to comply with the references of the peace process.

“We  cannot  go  into negotiations without references, the United Nations  resolutions   which  states the return of the 1967 border, as well resolution194 regarding refugees,” he added.

“The Israelis are pushing us to wonder if  our option for peace was right,” the President said.  “Peace is our strategic choice.”

Mr. President called upon the Hamas leadership to come and sign the Egyptian reconciliation paper, and to think about the future of Palestine.

In addition the President addressed the prisoners under the occupation “You are all in our eyes and hearts we won’t give up on your freedom” .

Nasser al-Qudwa, a member of  Fatah's Central Committee and the late chairman's nephew, said that 'Israel is responsible for the death of Arafat. We reiterate that he was poisoned to death.'
