UNRWA Schools Re-Open Doors to Students

GAZA, January 24, 2009 (WAFA)- About 220,000 students in Gaza’s 214 UNRWA schools returned to school and regular classes on Saturday.  The schools had been closed for nearly a month, UNRWA Deputy-Spokesman Sami Musha’sha’ told WAFA.

49 UNRWA schools sheltered about 50,000 Palestinians whose homes were bombarded by the Israeli Occupation Forces in their three-week offensive on the Gaza Strip.

Most of the displaced Gazans left UNRWA schools and returned to their damaged homes, or set up tents where their houses used to stand before the Israeli military offensive on Gaza was launched on December 27, 2008, reported WAFA’s correspondent in Gaza.

53 UN institutions, most of which are schools, were badly damaged and cannot be used before they are repaired.

About 9,000 people are homeless and are still seeking shelter inside UNRWA schools. “No one will be forced to leave,” Musha’sha’ commented, “We are doing our best to find them temporary shelters, until their houses are repaired or rebuilt. The Agency is distributing cash aid to enable displaced Gazans to pay for their living expenses.”
