Erikat: U.S and Trilateral Committee Role to be Activated so Israel not Resumes Settlement
RAMALLAH, December 29, 2007, (WAFA) - Head of Negotiations Department in the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Dr. Saeb Erikat denied early Saturday the Israeli news about Israel pledging to the U.S of not resuming settlement activities in the West Band and Jerusalem except Jabal Abu Ghneim.
Erikat was quoted as saying "there have to be no exceptions. The Israeli commitment means freezing all settlement activities including the natural growth of the settlements. So, either there is settlement or not".
He also called on the U.S to have observing mechanism on the ground so that Israel can not go on its settlement activities".
Asked if there are guarantees forcing Israel not to back off the said pledges, Erikar said "there is the trilateral mechanism which has to be reactivated and the U.S role has to be also activated".
Jabal Abu Ghneim is the Palestinian name for the area to the south-east of Jerusalem which is called "Har Homa" by Israel.
