Preparations for Arab Summit Commenced


CAIRO, March 16, 2007 (WAFA) -- Arab League officials will head to Riyadh on Saturday for preparation of the Arab Summit due to begin on March 28 and 29.

The team will be headed by assistant secretary general Sameer Saif.

Preparatory meetings will commence on March 24 at the level of permanent representatives, followed by a meeting of the economic and social council attended by Arab finance and economy ministers.

Arab foreign ministers will hold their preparatory meeting on March 26.

The League's Secretary General Amr Moussa had said in a statement the summit would be attended by heads of state and would tackle different political issues, stressing that there was no change in Arab peace initiative.

Topics to be discussed include the Arab-Israeli conflict, developments in the Palestinian territories and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, the situations in Lebanon, Iraq, and Somalia, as well as supporting peace and development in Sudan.

Moreover, the agenda includes placing a unified Arab stance over ensuring the Middle East was free of nuclear weapons and developing peaceful nuclear capabilities, alongside other issues.
