Cairo Welcomes UNESCO's Report on Israel's Excavation in Aqsa Mosque
CAIRO, March 15, 2007 (WAFA) -- Egypt welcomed Thursday the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) facts report about the Israeli excavation of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, calling for actions to stop sabotage of Islamic monuments.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul-Gheit revealed in press statement the decision of UNESCO's Executive Board to send an international committee to supervise the operation was "right", demanding that the scared mosque was protected against Israeli diggings.
The excavations were a violation of international laws, namely conventions of The Hague and Geneva which called for preserving and protecting cultural heritage, said the statement.
Egypt worked intensively withinb the UNESCO in order to send team to Jerusalem, stated Abul-Gheit, adding that Cairo would push for an extraordinary meeting for UNESCO's Executive Board in order to issue a resolution on the team's report.
