President Abbas After Meeting Solana: Hope Must be Given for End of Conflict
BRUSSELS, February 23, 2007 (WAFA) - President Mahmoud Abbas stressed Friday the importance of giving the peoples of the region a hope for a everlasting end of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Speaking to reporters after meeting in Brussels with The EU's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, at the headquarters of the EU Council, President Abbas thanked Solana for his "continued effort to help the cause of peace".
He stressed his commitment to three principles: a two state-solution, renouncing violence and respect of previous peace agreements.
President Abbas asked the EU to work on lifting the political and economic boycott on the Palestinian people once the new government is approved.
He said they discussed the future prospects of a political solution for a two-state solution, the creation of a national unity government and underlined that the PNA is not changing its position on the Road Map.
President Abbas said ties between the EU and Palestine were improving day by day and he thanked Solana's efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the Palestinian people.
For his part, Solana said that the future new Palestinian unity government between Fatah and Hamas "must be part of the solution and not part of the problem."
Solana reiterated the EU's stance in favour of the realization of a two-state solution between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
Solana added that it was a "very important moment," for Palestine referring to the Quartet meeting in Berlin earlier this week.
He said the EU supports Abbas' drive to push forward a political movement for the realisation of a two-state solution.
"EU is not boycotting the Palestinian people. We have never let down the Palestinian people," stressed Solana.
