Israeli High Court Approves House Demolitions in Rafah


TELAVIV, May 16, 2004, (WAFA) – The High Court of Judge on Sunday rejected a petition by residents of the Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip for a ban on further Israel Occupation Forces (IOF) demolitions of homes.... Justice Eliahu Mazza on Friday issued an interim order temporarily barring the IOF from demolishing homes in Rafah Refugee Camp.... The injunction was issued after 13 residents of Rafah petitioned the High Court against GOC Southern Command, saying the IOF planned to demolish houses in order to widen the so-called Philadelphi Route, which the Israeli say it demarcates the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.... Earlier, IOF military bulldozers demolished within the last three days at least150 houses in the city area of block “O” of the city refugee camp of Yibna.... Over the weekend, the IOF conducted a mass demolition of buildings in the Rafah refugee camp, destroying as many as 150 homes and leaving more than 1,000 people homeless, in the city area of block “O” of the city refugee camp of Yibna....
