Russia Supports UN General Assembly's Resolution On OPT
MOSCOW, MAY 7,2004, (WAFA)-Russia supported on Friday the adoption of the UN General Assembly's resolution on the status of the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem.... In a statement issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday evening, it said that the resolution reaffirms that the Palestinians have the right to self-determination and sovereignty over their territories and sets forth a provision on the necessity to achieve a fair and comprehensive settlement in the Middle East on the basis of negotiations and the coexistence of two independent states, Israel and Palestine..... 'We consider that now it is important to intensify under the aegis of the Quartet the efforts by the international community to resume the peace process in the Middle East based on the parties' implementation of the Road Map and the United Nations Security Council's Resolutions 242, 338, 1397 and 1515,' according to the statement.... The statement stressed that the problems of refugees, territorial demarcation, settlements and East Jerusalem, should be tackled on the basis of a mutual consent of the parties themselves and via negotiations in an attempt to achieve a durable and comprehensive settlement in the Middle East.... The UN General Assembly, on May 6 by a broad majority of votes, adopted a resolution introduced at the Palestinian delegation's initiative on the status of the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem.
