Newspapers review: President’s remarks on severing ties with Israel focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Thursday, July 04, 2019 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks expressing his readiness to sever all ties with Israel hit the front page headlines in Thursday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Abbas was reported in al-Ayyam stating: “I will not dare to gamble with the interest of my people and will not give up on their rights.”

He was also reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida declaring that: “If Israel does not abide by the agreements, we are going to cancel them all no matter what will happen.”

He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stressing that the US-led Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century, “will fail just as the economic workshop in Bahrain’s capital, Manama, failed.”

He was also reported reiterating that: “We will not deal with the US administration until it walks back its decisions on the Palestinian question” and renewing rejection to receive partial tax revenue dues from Israel.

On the other hand, al-Quds reported White House senior adviser Jared Kushner saying that the next steps of the so-called Mideast peace plan would be revealed as soon as next week.

Kushner was reported in al-Ayyam hinting that the plan calls for the resettlement of Palestinian refugees where they are and describing Palestinian boycott of the Manama workshop as “hysterical and erratic”.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was reported in the dailies stating that the initial elements of the US-touted Mideast plan contravene the United Nations Security Council’s resolutions.

According to al-Quds, the Palestinian Authority has requested an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

It said that the Egyptian security delegation has postponed its visit to the besieged Gaza Strip.

With connection to daily Israeli military raids, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that two Palestinians were injured with Israeli gunfire as thousands of Israeli settlers forced their way into Jospeh’s Tomb in the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

They added that Israeli military bulldozers demolished a park and water wells and uprooted trees in Khirbet Khashm al-Daraj and Umm al-Kheir villages, east of Yatta in the southern Hebron hills.

The dailies reported that Israeli forces shot and injured two Palestinian children in Abu Dis town, east of Jerusalem.

Al-Quds said that Israeli forces seized a water network used for irrigation in al-Jiftlik village in the Jordan Valley.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Israeli Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Uri Ariel along with scores of settlers forced their way into flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Al-Quds published a translation for Washington Post’s analysis Trump’s envoys take a hammer to Mideast peace.

Expert on Israeli settlement construction Bashar Qaryouti was reported in al-Quds hailing the fact that Khirbet Sarra, south of Nablus, has blocked Israeli settlers’ efforts to seize thousands of dunums of Palestinian land.

It said that the United Nations agency responsible for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) has reached an understanding with owners of demolished houses on reconstruction in Gaza.

It spotlighted the results of the latest public opinion poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR).

It elaborated that the overwhelming majority of the public demands the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections.

Palestinian Finance Ministry was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida announcing that the government will be paying only 60 percent of the monthly payroll of the civil servants for the month of June 2019 in addition to the fixed transportation allowance.

Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu was reported in al-Ayyam saying that his country is preparing to wage a broad military campaign in Gaza if needed.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida calling on the European Union to lead political efforts in the post-Trump’s plan period.

Regionally, al-Quds said that Jordanian lawmakers called for signing a code of honor to not allow the transport of gas supplies from Israel to Jordan.

Al-Ayyam elaborated that Jordanian lawmakers step up their campaign urging the government to cancel the gas deal with Israel.

Jordanian trade s were reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida slamming the Silwan tunnel recently inaugurated with the participation of US officials as a threat to the Christian and Islamic Arabic presence in Jerusalem.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Arab Parliament’s speaker Mishaal al-Salami urged France to exert pressure on Israel to release all Palestinian tax and customs revenues.
