Newspapers Review: Closure of Gaza sea, demolitions, deal of century focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Thursday, June 13, 2019 (WAFA) – Israel’s closure of the sea for Gaza fishermen, demolitions in Jerusalem and Jordan Valley, and the meeting of Fatah’s Revolutionary Council on the American deal of the century were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

The lead story in al-Quds touched on the Israeli closure of the Gaza sea banning fishermen from using it as a collective punishment policy for alleged flying of incendiary balloons from Gaza into Israel that cause fire.

Israeli demolitions of Palestinian-owned structures in Jerusalem, particularly near Qalandia checkpoint to the north of the city, as well as in the northern Jordan Valley and building a new settlement outpost in the heart of Hebron were the main front page story in al-Ayyam daily, as well as in al-Quds.

The Fatah meeting on the upcoming US-sponsored Manama workshop, which is part of the overall so-called deal of the century, was the main front page story of the official al-Hayat al-Jadida daily, which also highlighted statements by President Mahmoud Abbas condemning the attack on Abha airport in Saudi Arabia.

The Fatah meeting was also highlighted on the front page of al-Ayyam, which also quoted the government reiterating its refusal to attend the Manama meeting, while it said in another story that the United Nations is going to send an envoy to the meeting.

Al-Quds said on the Manama meeting that Iraq and Lebanon said they will not attend it, while Jordan’s position was not yet clear.

In other news, al-Ayyam said Jerusalem heads of church have condemned in a statement an Israeli High Court ruling against property owned by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Al-Quds published this statement on its front. It also said Israeli plans in occupied Jerusalem could spark a conflict in the region.

Al-Quds quoted a report by the Israeli rights group, B’Tselem, saying Israel intentionally targeted high rises in Gaza that led to the death of 13 Palestinian civilians.

It said Palestinians have condemned a decision by Moldovia regarding moving its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The paper also said Israel is pressuring Germany to consider the boycott movement anti-Semitic.

Al-Ayyam said an Australian have admitted guilt in killing of a Palestinian student in Sydney.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh called on the International Labor Organization to follow up on the situation of Palestinian workers in Israel.
