Newspaper Review: President Abbas’ meeting with Qatari Emir focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, May 22, 2019 (WAFA) – The meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and Qatari Emir in Doha dominated the front page headlines in Wednesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The dailies said that President Mahmoud Abbas discussed with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani the latest political developments on the Palestinian issue and the region.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida added that Abbas received the Arab ambassadors accredited to Doha.

The US-led “Peace to Prosperity” workshop, scheduled on June 25-26 in Baharian’s capital, Manama, also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

Al-Quds spotlighted Arab and international efforts aimed to convince the Palestinian leadership to attend the workshop, which the US administration has cast as a preliminary roll-out of it Mideast deal of the century plan.

Al-Ayyam reported in this regard that nobody is going to attend the conference, and that major Arab capitals have disassociated themselves from it.

It added that Palestinian businessmen affirmed their rejection to attend the economic conference or workshop.

Additionally, al-Quds highlighted annual Health Report for 2018 released by the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

It reported UNRWA warning in the report that the “health and dignity of Palestine refugees remain at risk”.

According to al-Quds,  Israeli forces assaulted and injured a Palestinian elderly during a raid in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

The dailies said that Israeli soldiers shot and detained a Palestinian child during a raid into al-Khader town, south of Bethlehem.

Al-Ayyam said that a Palestinian young man succumbed to his wounds he had sustained from Israeli gunfire as he participated in the Great March of Return protests to the east of Rafah in the besieged Gaza Strip in April.

Moreover, al-Quds and al-Ayyam highlighted a petition submitted by about 200 former Israeli security officials to Premier Benjamin Netanyahu, warning him that the planned annexation of the West Bank would endanger Israel’s security.

Furthermore, al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Deputy Chairman of Fatah Mahmoud al-Aloul handed the Assistant of the Chinese Foreign Minister a letter addressed by President Abbas to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

It said that Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh discussed with the Belgian Consul General in Jerusalem Danielle Haven and head of the representative office of Malta Reuben Gauci the latest political developments in the Palestinian arena and the means to promote joint cooperation.
