Newspapers Review: The American deal of the century highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Monday, May 20, 2019 (WAFA) – The American so-called deal of the century was highlighted on the front page of two of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

Al-Quds said Jarod Kushner, author of the deal of the century and son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, has confirmed to it that the focus at the moment will be on the economic part of the deal while the political part has been postponed. It said the White House is going to issue a statement on this within hours.

Al-Ayyam said the While House announced last night that a workshop for international parties on the economic part of the deal of the century will be held in Bahrain in late June.

At the same time, al-Ayyam said quoted Jason Greenblatt, the US envoy to the Middle East and co-author of the deal of the century, attacked the Palestinian Authority for paying allowances to families of Palestinians held in Israeli jails for resisting the occupation or killed by Israelis in the course of the resistance.

The lead story in al-Hayat al-Jadida focused on Israeli police raiding Al-Aqsa Mosque after the night prayers to force evict the worshippers from it.

Al-Quds said the Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, denounced the Israeli eviction of the worshippers from the Muslim holy place. It said a right-wing Israeli minister led Jewish fanatics in a provocative tour of Al-Aqsa compound yesterday.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli police confiscated food packages intended for the poor Palestinian families in Jerusalem during Ramadan and prevented their distribution while Palestinians organizing the distribution were detained. It printed a picture of the police seizing the packages.

At the same time, said al-Quds, police detained two guards of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The paper said Jewish thugs went on a rampage on West Bank roads, harassing and attacking Palestinian commuters, as soldiers raided several towns and villages and detained Palestinian activists.

It said the Bethlehem municipality was able to regain control over 28 dunums of land separated from the city by the apartheid wall and grabbed illegally by an Israeli company.

Al-Ayyam said the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) denounced the decision of the German parliament against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, while al-Hayat al-Jadida said the PLO and the Arab League called on the German parliament to rescind its decision.

Al-Ayyam said Israel is moving toward giving its ministries more power in the West Bank while gradually doing away with the so-called Civil Administration, an arm of the military government.

It said the Israeli High Court gave the green light to Jewish fanatics to hold their annual march marking the occupation of Jerusalem inside Palestinian areas, particularly in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the High Court also insists on releasing the Israeli responsible for the killing of Palestinian teacher Aisha Rabi in the West Bank and placing him under house arrest.

It also reported on the Eurovision contest in Israel and said the Palestinian flag was in display at the event held in Tel Aviv.
