RAMALLAH, Tuesday, May 14, 2019 (WAFA) – The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as well as the security situation following Israel’s bombardment dominated the front page headlines in today’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.
The United Nations Middle East envoy Nickolay Mladenov warned of the collapse of the ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian factions in the besieged Gaza Strip, which was reported in al-Quds and al-Ayyam, in which he said that “the last weekend we got the closest we have ever been to another full war.”
Mladenov made his remarks during the inauguration of a solar power plant for a Gaza hospital.
Al-Quds added that the Chairman of the Qatari Committee for Gaza Reconstruction Muhammad al-Emadi discussed with Mladenov the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added that impoverished families in Gaza started to receive Qatari payouts following al-Emadi’s arrival to the besiege enclave.
On the other hand, al-Quds reported the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, expressing concern that over a million Palestinians in Gaza will not have enough food by June unless it secures an additional $60 million by then.
Also with regards to Gaza, al-Ayyam said that Israeli military beefed up deployments along Gaza’s frontier and extensively deployed the Iron Dome system across Israel.
According to al-Quds, Israeli military vehicles infiltrated several meters into the northern and eastern Gaza Strip, razed land and returned to Israel.
It added that Israeli forces prevented Palestinians from opening a road in Salem village, east of the northern West Bank city of Nablus, to serve area farms.
Israel’s plan to build new segregated roads for settlers-only in the West Banal also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam explained that Israeli occupation authorities approved the two major roads to serve settlers in the West Bank.
Al-Quds said that this approval sets the ground for the seizure of 807 dunums of Palestinian land, while al-Ayyam identified the planned roads as the Huwara bypass road in the north and Al-Arroub bypass road in the south of the West Bank.
Al-Ayyam said that Israeli occupation authorities also approved the construction of 941 new settlement units in Jerusalem.
According to al-Quds, several human rights organizations urged the UN to intervene to prevent Israel from deporting Mustafa Kharouf, who works as a photo-journalist for the Turkish Anadolu news agency.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that the Palestinian cabinet approved the formation of a national committee to be responsible for reviewing the education and health sectors.
Yet, al-Hayat al-Jadida opted to highlight President Mahmoud Abbas’ condemnation of the acts of sabotage on four commercial vessels near the United Arab Emirates’ territorial waters.
Al-Ayyam also highlighted Middle East Eye’s report Revealed: New ‘deal of the century’ details show minimal Israeli concessions.
It said that member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee Hanan Ashrawi was denied a United States travel visa.
It added that Israeli forces detained several Palestinians and injured others during raids into Jenin refugee camp and al-Yamun town in the northern West Bank district of Jenin.
Additionally, Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida urging the Palestinian people to remain united since the next three months would be difficult.
Al-Ayyam said that an anti-occupation billboard greets Eurovision visitors in Israel.
According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli police forced Palestinian Muslim worshippers observing all night worship inside East Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound to evacuate it.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) revealing that the Palestinians worldwide increased nine folds in number since the 1948 Nakba.
