Newspapers Review: Four Palestinians killed in Gaza by Israeli gunfire focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, May 04, 2019 (WAFA) – Israeli killing of four Palestinians in Gaza yesterday was the main story on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

While al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida had the figure at only three, al-Ayyam put it at four including a person who died later in the day of his wounds. Two of the dead were killed in an Israeli airstrike and other two during the border protests that also caused in injury to dozens of Palestinians.

In the West Bank, the papers said dozens of Palestinians were injured when Israeli soldiers attacked protests against settlements, while Israeli settlers vandalized Palestinian vehicles north of the West Bank.

In other news, al-Quds said Palestinians in Jerusalem held the Friday prayer at the site of the demolished homes in Silwan.

It said United Nations officials have called on Israel to immediately halt demolition of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam said the Israeli High Court approved speeding up demolition of Palestinian structures in Area C of the West Bank, which is under full Israeli military control and which makes up over 60 percent of the area of the occupied West Bank.

The paper also quoted Jarod Kushner, senior adviser to the US president, saying that his so-called deal of the century affirms Jerusalem as capital of Israel and it does not talk about the two-state solution.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement saying that without Jerusalem as capital of the Palestinian state, no deal or initiative will have any chance of success.

It quoted Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), saying that reference to the deal of the century as a deal rather than a treaty is proof that the US wants to dictate a solution rather than reach one through negotiations.

It quoted the Irish president saying that the two-state solution is the key to security and stability in the region.

It said the European Union contributed 15 million euros to the salaries of retired personnel.

Al-Quds had a story about a wedding between two Palestinians, the groom from Tulkarm in the West Bank and the bride from Arara, an Arab town inside Israel, held at an Israeli military checkpoint between Tulkarm and Israel.
