Newspapers Review: The weekly Friday protests in Gaza and West Bank focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, April 27, 2019 (WAFA) – The weekly protests on the Gaza border with Israel and in the various West Bank contact areas with the Israeli military were the focus of today’s three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

All three papers said dozens of Palestinians were injured in another day of clashes with Israeli soldiers on the Gaza border as several thousand people protested as part of the March of Return activity.

Al-Ayyam said the leaders of the protests in Gaza have decided to intensify their border activities after Israel has refused to allow the Qatari fund in.

In the West Bank, protests and clashes were reported in several villages, namely Bilin, Nilin and Kufr Qaddoum, said the dailies, adding that an elderly woman in Yatta in the south of the West Bank received burns to the chest after she was hit by a teargas canister shot by Israeli soldiers.

In other news, the papers said Christians following the Orthodox Church marked Good Friday in the Old City of Jerusalem and elsewhere in the West Bank as more than 40,000 Muslims attended the Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida while al-Quds put the number at 55,000.

Al-Quds said Hamas leader in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh praised the position of King Abdullah of Jordan regarding Jerusalem and its holy places.

Al-Ayyam said Thousands of Jordanians demonstrated in support of Jerusalem.

Al-Quds said UNIFIL is going to increase its patrols in South Lebanon.

It also quoted officials in Dubai saying that all countries were invited to participate in the Dubai Expo 2020 following criticism to that Arabian Gulf country for inviting Israel.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the European Union has expressed concern over Israel’s demolition of Palestinian property in occupied Jerusalem.

It said a conference is going to be held in Brussels today and tomorrow on the Palestinian prisoners.

It also said President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated his Egyptian counterpart on the liberation of Sinai anniversary.
