Newspapers review: Kushner’s remarks on “deal of the century” focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Wednesday April 24, 2019 (WAFA) – The remarks of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner on the date on announcing the US-touted Mideast plan deal of the century, deal of the century, dominated the front page headlines in Wednesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Kushner was reported in al-Quds and al-Ayyam that the so-called deal of the century would be unveiled after the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan in early June.

He was also reported saying that the plan, touted as a solution to the Palestinian question by Trump, would focus on improving the economic situation of Palestinians and ensuring Israel’s security.

On the other hand, al-Hayat al-Jadida opted to highlight Palestinian prime minister Muhammad Shtayyeh’s statement on paying the public servants’ salaries for April in its main front page item.

Shtayyeh was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that the government is going to cover only 60 percent of the public servants’ salaries for April.

He was also reported calling on Norway to ratchet up pressure on Israel to release in full the Palestinian tax revenues and the US Congress to recognize the Palestinian state.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would name a new illegal Israeli settlement in Syria’s Golan Heights after Trump ]out of gratitude for the White House’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Syrian territory[.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported an incident in which Israeli soldiers a 16-year-old Palestinian teen while he was blindfolded and handcuffed in Tuqu town, south of Bethlehem.

The dailies said that a Palestinian worker from the northern West Bank town of Qabatya fell from a high place and died during an Israeli police chase in the Palestinian town of Arrabat al-Battouf inside Israel.

The man was identified as Muhammad Majed al-Sakaran.

Furthermore, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israeli forces stormed the family house of Omar Abu Laila in Az-Zawiya town, west of Salfit city. The house was detonated several hours later.

Abu Laila, 19, allegedly killed two Israelis, including a soldier, and seriously injured another in a shooting attack outside Ariel settlement, north of Salfit city, on March 17. He was later killed by Israeli forces and his body continues to be withheld by Israeli authorities.

Al-Quds reported US Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt holding the Hamas movement responsible for the deteriorating situation in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Greenblatt’s opinion article appeared under the title “Care About Gaza? Blame Hamas”.

Highlighting the situation in occupied Jerusalem, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that scores of Israeli Jewish settlers forced their way into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound for the third day of the Passover.

Al-Ayyam added that settlers also forced their way into the Ibrahimi Mosque in the old town of Hebron and reported the Council of Muslim Religious Endowments (Waqf) in Jerusalem warning about the intrusions.

Al-Ayyam said that Israeli police detained a Palestinian after assaulting him in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

Moreover, al-Quds and al-Ayyam spotlighted US Senator Bernie Sanders’ remarks describing the Israeli government as racist over its treatment of Palestinians.

Sanders said: “The goal must be to try to bring people together and not just support one country, which is now run by a right-wing, dare I say, racist government,” and added that Netanyahu “is treating the Palestinian people extremely unfairly”.

Al-Quds reported Hamas official Salah al-Bardawil revealing a plan to form that Higher National Committee in Charge of Confronting the Deal of the Century.

It also reported that Higher National Committee for the Great March of Return warning against Israel’s procrastination with regards to implementing the recent understandings on restoring clam and lifting the blockade on Gaza.

It also reported senior official of the Islamic Jihad movement Khaled al-Batsh welcoming Fatah Vice Chairman Mahmoud al-Aloul’s remarks threatening to cease security coordination with Israel.

Al—Ayyam reported Jordanian Minister for Media Affairs Jumana Ghunaimat stating that the government has no knowledge of the details of the so-called deal of the century.

It also reported her affirming that the region would not enjoy peace without a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian question.

Ghunaimat was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that her country rejects any proposal or settlement that infringes the fundamental Jordanian principles.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the Palestinian Monetary Authority instructed banks to postpone the repayment of loan installments for public servants.
