Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight agreement between prisoners and administration

 

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, April 16, 2019 (WAFA) – The agreement between the Palestinian political prisoners and the Israel Prison Service that led the prisoners to end their week-long hunger strike was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies, particularly al-Quds, which made it its main front page story.

The agreement gave the prisoners most of their demands that led to their strike, mainly removing the jamming devices that cause cancer and installing public phones to allow the prisoners to be in touch with their families few days a week.

Al-Ayyam, on the other hand, made the report on the so-called deal of the century that appeared in the Washington Post and which says no Palestinian state and only improving living conditions of Palestinians as its main front page story.

It said lower on the page that former European officials have called on their governments to face the American deal of the century and support the two-state solution. It also quoted Palestine Liberation Organization official Saeb Erekat saying the deal aims to destroy the peace process.

Al-Quds talked also no this issue and said in another story on this subject that King Abdullah of Jordan is pessimistic regarding the deal of the century.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted as its main front page story a statement by President Mahmoud Abbas on the fire the broke out near the Marawani mosque in Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

The first meeting of the new Palestinian government headed by Mohammad Shtayeh was also highlighted on the front page of the dailies focusing mainly on the decision of the government to enforce austerity measures to face its difficult financial situation caused by Israel’s withholding of the Palestinian tax revenues.

Al-Ayyam said the Arab foreign ministers are going to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday in the presence of President Abbas to discuss the Palestinian situation.

The papers also reported on the fire that broke out in the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris and said President Abbas has express sorrow at the incident.
