RAMALLAH, Wednesday, April 03, 2019 (WAFA) – The killing of a 23-year-old Palestinian during a detention raid in Qalandia refugee camp, north of Jerusalem, dominated the front page headlines in Wednesday’s issue of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian youth in Qalandia refugee camp, with al-Ayyam noting that he was killed in cold blood.
Mohammad Edwan, 23, was in his vehicle when he was shot by Israeli forces from close range with live ammunition.
Al-Quds added that Edwan was laid to his rest in Qalandia.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida printed photos showing mourners marching in the funeral procession of Edwan, while al-Ayyam printed a photo showing his family members taking a farewell look at his body.
Additionally, the dailies reported that a Palestinian succumbed to his wounds inflicted by Israeli gunfire during the million-man march that commemorated the first annual anniversary of the Great March of Return protests on last Saturday.
The man was identified as Fares Abu Hajras, 25, from Khan Younes city in the southern Gaza Strip.
Moreover, al-Quds reported that Israeli naval ships targeted fishermen in the central district of the besieged Gaza Strip and Israeli troops stationed along Gaza’s frontier targeted Gaza farmers.
The spate of home demolitions in the West Bank also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.
The dailies said in this regard that Israeli bulldozers razed two Palestinian residential buildings in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Shufat and Beit Jala city, west of Bethlehem.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that the Palestinian family whose two-story building was demolished in Shufat was ordered to pay exorbitant demolition costs.
Regarding Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention, al-Quds said that the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) has imposed strict restrictions to confront the prisoners’ open-ended hunger strike, scheduled to start on Sunday April 7th.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Israeli suppression forces raided section 4 of the Israeli Rimon prison and searched prisoners’ belongings.
Furthermore, al-Quds reported Jordan’s Religious Endowment (Waqf) Minister Abdul-Nasser Abu al-Bassal affirming that Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is indivisible.
It also reported Chairman of the Awqaf Council in Jerusalem Sheikh Abdul-Azim Salhab affirming that the Palestinian people would not compromise on their legitimate rights in Jerusalem and that Bab al-Rahma prayer area would remain accessible to worshippers.
Regarding Egypt’s efforts to defuse tensions in Gaza, al-Quds said that the Egyptian security delegation presented a timeframe to Hamas leaders for the implementation of the Israeli pledges towards Gaza.
Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was reported in al-Quds affirming his support for Jordan’s King Abdullah II who has to withstand external pressures.
He was also reported in al-Ayyam saying that the rocket from Gaza that hit a house in Israel last week launched due to a technical error.
The dailies highlighted an Israeli media investigation report revealing that former Israeli ‘Defence’ Minister and Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz instructed each brigade commander during the second popular Palestinian uprising (intifada) to kill 10 Palestinians each day.
UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov was reported in al-Ayyam stating that “at its core the crisis in Gaza is political” and urging Palestinian factions to engage with Egypt on reconciliation efforts.
According to al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli settlers chopped down 550 vineyards and almond trees belonging to Palestinian farmers in Deir Jarir, northeast of Ramallah.
Al-Ayyam reported former US diplomats warning that US President Donald Trump’s recent recognition of Israeli sovereignty over Syria’s Golan Heights could encourage Israel to annex parts of the West Bank.
Besides, al-Ayyam reported that Palestinian Public Prosecution explaining the circumstances surrounding the death of a Palestinian youth inside Beitunia Correction and Rehabilitation Center, west of Ramallah.
Mahmoud Rashad al-Hamalawi from Gaza was arrested by the Palestinian protective security agency on March 18th.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated Slovak President-elect Zuzana Caputova for her election as president of the Republic of Slovakia.
It said that Finance and Planning Minister Shukri Bishara made a detailed presentation about the emergency budget to several representatives of civil society organizations during a meeting in Ramallah.
