Czech’s position on Jerusalem is in line with international law, EU, says its foreign minister

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, November 14, 2018 (WAFA) – Czech Republic’s Foreign Minister Tomás Petrícek said on Wednesday that his country’s position on Jerusalem is in line with international law and the European Union, according to a statement by the Palestinian Foreign Ministry.

Petricek said this during a meeting with Foreign Minister Riyad Malki in Ramallah, during which Malki urged the Czech Republic not to move its embassy to Jerusalem as its president had said he would do.

The Czech minister said his country’s position on Jerusalem is in line with international law and the European Union’s position and that the Czech House that will open in Jerusalem during the visit of the Czech president to Israel at the end of this month does not have any diplomatic status and is only a cultural center.

He said the Czech Republic supports the two-state solution as stipulated in the international resolutions.

Malki told his Czech counterpart that what Israel is doing in occupied East Jerusalem, such as settlements, displacing its residents and turning it into an Israeli city, jeopardize the future of the holy city.

International law recognizes Jerusalem as occupied territory and rejects any changes to its legal status.

Petricek also said his country will continue to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and development projects in Palestine.
