Newspapers Review: Settlement activities, Gaza protests, social security law highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, November 06, 2018 (WAFA) – The three dailies highlighted various subjects in their Tuesday issue.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Israeli settlement activities in the northern Jordan Valley and in the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam highlighted the protests in the Gaza Strip on the northern borders with Israel during which a number of people were injured from live Israeli bullets or tear gas.

Al-Quds, which also reported on the Gaza protests, highlighted in its main front page story the new social security law that is causing a stir in the West Bank among private sector employees, who are strongly opposed to it. The paper quoted Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah giving assurances that the government wants to review the law with various sectors and change it if necessary.

The paper also reported on Israeli laws targeting Palestinians, including statements by Saeb Erekat, the Palestine Liberation Organization official, saying Israel is going to cut money from the Palestinian Authority’s tax revenues to give to Gaza, which was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida.

Al-Quds said Israeli police and the West Jerusalem municipality are going to install 500 smart cameras around the occupied section of Jerusalem to monitor every activity on the ground.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli police has recommended allowing more visits by Israeli lawmakers to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City, a step that is bound to increase tension in the sensitive Muslim holy compound. Currently the visits are ed to once every three months. Police recommends making it once every month.

Israel, said the paper, plans to build a railway with the neighboring Arab countries.

It said an Egyptian security delegation arrived in Gaza on Monday with Israeli answers to questions from Hamas on enforcing calm.
