Newspapers Review: Gaza protests and Israeli army killing of three Palestinians focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, October 6, 2018 (WAFA) – The protests at the Gaza border with Israel on Friday and the Israeli army killing of three Palestinians, including a 12-year-old boy, were the front page highlight of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.

The papers said that in addition to the murder of the three, the Israeli army shot and injured 376 other Palestinians in Gaza, some of them were in critical condition.

The papers also highlighted the protests in the West Bank against the Israeli occupation and its settlement activities, particularly in Khan al-Ahmar village east of Jerusalem, and said that dozens of Palestinians were injured in the Israeli army crackdown on the peaceful protests.

They said Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farmers while they were harvesting their olives.

Al-Quds said the Israeli army closed main roads in the occupied West Bank to allow settlers to parade through the streets freely.

It said Jewish groups are against the existence of the Holy Sepulcher Church, the most important Christian site where Jesus Christ is believed buried.

The three papers also highlighted the recent conflict between the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and Israel and said UNRWA has expressed concern over statements by Israel’s West Jerusalem mayor, Nir Barkat, in which he said that he is considering ending UNRWA presence and services to refugees in occupied East Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Aqsa Mosque guards caught a Jewish fanatic who sneaked into the holy compound in Jerusalem on Friday and handed him over to the Israeli police. Non-Muslims are not allowed into the holy mosque on Fridays.

It also said the crown prince of the Malaysian state of Perlis performed the Friday prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The paper said Fatah’s Revolutionary Council is going to meet on Friday in Ramallah in the presence of President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the latest in the political process and reconciliation with Hamas.

Al-Ayyam quoted the new head of the Islamic Jihad, Ziad Nakhaleh saying in Gaza that life will be made difficult for Gaza periphery Israeli settlements if the Israeli army keeps killing Palestinians.

Al-Quds, meanwhile, quoted Hamas leader in Gaza, Yehya Sinwar, saying, as reported in an Israeli newspaper, that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not achieve anything if he occupied Gaza and that Israel is responsible for Gaza’s humanitarian disaster.

The papers also reported on developments regarding investigating Netanyahu for corruption and Saudi Arabia telling US President Donald Trump that it will not pay the US for its security.
