RAMALLAH, July 17, 2018 (WAFA) – Saeb Erekat, head of the Negotiations Affairs Department (NAD) in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), defended on Monday his staff, speaking specifically about Xavier Abu Eid who has been targeted in a social media campaign to smear his image.
Erekat said in a statement that a fake Facebook page alleged to belong to Abu Eid “aimed at spreading false and fabricated news” about Abu Eid, stressing that its goal was “to divert the attention of our people away from the practices of the (Israeli) occupation and its daily violations against our people and to draw it into illusive and unfounded issues.”
Erekat praised Abu Eid, describing him as “a promising figure and one of the symbols of the Palestinian national movement, which has contributed in all honesty and dedication to serving the Palestinian cause at the local, Arab and international levels.”
He said Abu Eid “is one of the most important pillars of the Negotiations Affairs Department, in which he and his colleagues have achieved a lot of successes and national accomplishments that make Palestine proud of.”
He called on the Palestinian people “not to deal with this fake page and its malicious content,” warning against anyone hassling any of the NAD staff.
