Newspapers Review: Irish ban on settlement products highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, July 12, 2018 (WAFA) – The vote in the Irish Senate on a bill banning import of Israeli settlement products was highlighted on the front page of the Thursday issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The papers said the Palestinians welcomed the Irish move and called on the European Union member states to follow suit and pass legislation banning settlement products in their countries.

Another main front page story in the three dailies was the situation at Khan al-Ahmar community east of Jerusalem which Israel wants to demolish and uproot its Palestinian residents in order to build a settlement in its place.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said in its main top front page story with a headline that went across the page that Fatah’s Revolutionary Council is going to meet at Khan al-Ahmar on Thursday.

Al-Quds said the Palestinian cabinet declared Khan al-Ahmar a village and it was going to appoint a council to run its affairs.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds said the Israeli army closed roads leading to the community with cement blocks and prevented foreign diplomats from reaching it.

The papers said Israel seized caravans in Masafer Yatta in the south of the occupied West Bank that were part of school classrooms in an attempt to prevent any Palestinian presence in the area, where it restricts development to only illegal Jewish settlements.

Al-Quds said the United Nations warned against Israeli demolition and displacement of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

In other news, al-Quds said a Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo for talks on reconciliation with Fatah.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted senior Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmad saying that his movement is going to hear Hamas position from the Egyptians.

It said the UN agency in charge of Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, has denied that it has frozen salaries of 22,000 of its employees in Gaza.

The papers also included various Arab and international news on Syria and the US conflict with its NATO allies.

Al-Quds included on its front page a picture of the Croatian football team celebrating after winning the semi-final match against England, which qualifies the team to play against France in the final World Cup match on Sunday in Russia.
