RAMALLAH, July 7, 2018 (WAFA) – The Friday protests at the Gaza border with Israel that left one dead and hundreds wounded were the highlight of the Saturday issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.
The papers said Israeli forces stationed at the border fired a tank shell at a group of Palestinian protesters killing one and injuring others. They said almost 400 were injured in the day’s clashes, most of them treated for inhaling tear gas.
The papers also highlighted the developments at Khan al-Ahmar in the West Bank and said hundreds of Palestinians performed the Friday prayer at the Khan in solidarity with it and to protest Israeli plans to demolish the Palestinian Bedouin community to build a Jewish settlement on its ruins.
Al-Quds said UN officials have called on Israel to stop demolition plans of Khan al-Ahmar, which is a violation of international law that bans transfer of population under occupation.
The papers also highlighted Israeli settlers’ attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, particularly in the northern Nablus-area village of Urif, where several Palestinians were injured when confronting the settlers and soldiers protecting them.
In other news, al-Hayat al-Jadida said Palestinian administrative detainees in Israeli jails began escalation steps in their struggle to gain their freedom starting with hunger strike by some.
The three papers said President Mahmoud Abbas bestowed the highest Palestinian medal on the Swedish activist Benjamin Ladraa who walked from Sweden to Palestine in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people living under Israeli oppression but was stopped by the Israeli army at the border with Jordan going into the occupied Palestinian territory and was turned back without allowing him to complete his mission.
Al-Ayyam quoted a European source saying that the European Union has no intention to decrease aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA) after Israeli media rumored that the EU is going to cut the amount the PA pays to the families of prisoners from the aid. The source said the EU does not pay families any salaries to cut.
It also said Slovakia denied Israeli reports that it was going to move it embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
The paper said Sheikh Raed Salah, founder to the Islamic movement in Israel, which was later banned, was released from prison after serving 11 months and placed under very strict house arrest conditions.
Al-Quds said the Israeli police started a new security plan that would strengthen its hold on the Old City of Jerusalem. The plan includes bringing police reinforcements into the city and installing more cameras at almost every corner.
World Cup results were also highlighted on the front page of al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida.
