Newspapers Review: The serious developments at Khan al-Ahmar highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, July 5, 2018 (WAFA) – The recent serious developments at the afflicted Khan al-Ahmar community, east of Jerusalem, which is under threat of demolition by the Israeli authorities, were highlighted on the front page of the Thursday issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The papers said the Israeli army demolished nine structures and three agricultural spots in Abu Nuwwar Bedouin community near Jerusalem, provoking widespread local and international condemnation.

The army also injured 35 people and detained eight who blocked attempts to demolish Khan al-Ahmad Bedouin community.

The papers printed pictures of the incident and showed police assaulting Adnan Husseini, member of the Palestinian cabinet in charge of East Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas later contacted Husseini to check on his health and has condemned the Israeli attacks against the activists.

It said a young Palestinian died in Gaza of Israeli army gunshot wounds sustained during the protests in May at the Gaza border with Israel.

The paper also quoted Saeb Erekat, member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), saying at a press conference that Abbas has formed a team to present solutions for the Gaza crisis.

Erekat also said that the Palestinian Authority will continue to pay allowances to prisoners despite Israeli objections and that a decision on relations with Israel will be taken soon.

The other papers also reported on Erekat’s remarks with al-Ayyam quoting the PLO official saying the Palestinian cause will not be solved by the methods of a real estate man.

Al-Quds said Washington did not change its decision regarding slashing aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Al-Ayyam said also that UNRWA employees in Gaza have protested the US refugee agency’s dismissal of 1000 employees hired by the temporary emergency program.

The three papers reported on Israeli settlement activities in Jerusalem and the West Bank, as well as Israeli escalation at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

Al-Quds said the Palestinians condemned an Israeli decision to allow lawmakers to enter into Al-Aqsa compound and said that Jewish fanatics have called for increasing their presence at the Muslim holy place.

The paper said a new poll showed that people were worried about the internal situation in light of the absence of President Abbas due to health reasons.
