A 4.3 magnitude earthquake hits the northern areas in the evening

NABLUS, July 5, 2018 (WAFA) – An 4.3 magnitude earthquake hit the northern areas of historic Palestine on Wednesday night and was felt even in the central areas.

The head of the Center for Earth Sciences and Seismic Engineering at al-Najah National University in Nablus, Jalal al-Dabbeek, told WAFA that at 10:45 pm, a slight earthquake measured at 4.3 degrees on the Richter scale struck the northern region of Lake Tiberias.

The depth of the epicenter of the earthquake was 10 kilometers below the surface of the earth, said Dabbeek. The epicenter of the earthquake was 100-105 kilometers northwest of the Jordanian capital, Amman, and 15-18 kilometers east and northeast of Nazareth.

He pointed out that the area has seen at least 10 earthquakes since 6:52 Wednesday morning, the latest of which was the earthquake that hit the region at 10:45 pm on the same day, noting that the areas of southern Lebanon, the Syrian Golan, northern Jordan and northern Palestine, including the areas of Jenin and Nablus, had felt the quake.

He stressed that the region is currently experiencing a seismic activity, as happened three years ago.

Dabbeek said that people in areas more than 100 km from the epicenter of the earthquake felt it due to the nature of the muddy earth and high buildings, especially people living on higher floors, indicating that this kind of earthquake is usually ed to a circle with 100 km diameter.
