Newspaper review: Conclusion of Prince William’s trip to Middle East focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, June 29, 2018 (WAFA) – The conclusion of Prince William’s five-day trip to the Middle East dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Friday.

Al-Quds reported that Prince William toured the Old City of Jerusalem, concluding his visit to Palestine.

It added that the Islamic Endowment (Waqf) authorities in Jerusalem condemned theintrusion of Israeli police into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound as during the reception of Prince William at the holy site.

Al-Ayyam reported Prince William wondering: “Are the Palestinian youth allowed to access ]the mosque compound[?, while al-Hayat al-Jadida said that William visited the mosque compound and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

The death of a Palestinian teen who succumbed to his wounds from Israeli gunshots in Gaza also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

The dailies said that Mustafa Abu Azzum, 17, succumbed to his wounds he sustained when he was hit with an Israeli artillery shell, east of Rafah city, in the southern besieged Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds added that an Israeli drone fired a missile at a group of Palestinian youths, east of Gaza city, while al-Ayyam said that Israeli occupation authorities continued to target Palestinians who flow kites in Gaza.

It also reported that Gaza youths have invented flaming balloons which they could fly into Gaza periphery settlements.

Highlighting the situation in the West Bank, the dailies reported that Israeli settlers slashed the tires of several vehicles and spray-painted anti-Palestinian graffiti on the wall of a structure in Urif village, south of Nablus.

According to al-Ayyam, Israeli forces injured a Palestinian young man with a live round during a raid that triggered clashes in al-Khader town, south of Bethlehem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported that Israeli forces detained a total of 20 Palestinians as they conducted multiple overnight raids across the West Bank.

According to al-Ayyam, ]suspected[ Israeli settlers torched 120 dunums of farmlands belonging to Saffa village, west of Ramallah.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard that Saffa Village Council has accused settlers of setting fire to scores of dunums of farmlands belonging to the village.

Furthermore, al-Quds said that Malaysian Prime Minister Mahatir bin Mohamad renewed his country’s support for the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.

It added that Israel demolished two homes in the Israeli Palestinian town of Jaljulia in central Israel, triggering confrontations with villagers.

It printed a translation of Stanley Cohen’s article indicating that US President Donald Trump’s much touted “Deal of the Century” requires Palestinians to accept slavery.

Additionally, al-Quds said that Palestinian national and religious factions in Jerusalem have called on Jerusalemites to boycott Israeli municipal elections.

President Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor for foreign relations Nabil Shaath announcing that Socialist International has adopted a resolution to boycott and sanctions Israel as well as to recognize the State of Palestine.

Yet, the UNRWA Staff Union was reported in al-Ayyam calling on the UNRWA administration to reverse its decision to terminate the contracts of many employees.

It added that the Higher National Commission for the Great March of Return has stepped up preparations to organize protests today along Gaza’s border as it faces the challenge of attracting many Gazans.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, the General Committee of Civil Affairs and the International Committee of the Red Cross have reached a deal to allow Palestinian families to visit their imprisoned members in Israeli jails twice a month.

Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee Saeb Erekat was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida reiterating that “Palestine is not for sale” in response to the US decision to freeze financial aid to the Palestinian Authority.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida spotlighted Fatah Deputy Chairman Mahmoud al-Aloul’s remarks during a solidarity visit to al-Khan al-Ahmar Palestinian Bedouin community, east of Jerusalem.

He was reported stressing that the Palestinian Bedouin communities are a key factor to protecting Palestinian land.
