Newspapers Review: Israeli raids on Gaza focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, June 27, 2018 (WAFA) – Israeli air raids on the Gaza Strip targeting alleged launchers of fire balloons were highlighted on the front page of two of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Wednesday.

The third, al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted statements by presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh in which he said that the deal of the century has turned into the Gaza deal. Abu Rudeineh’s statements were also reported in the other two dailies, al-Quds and al-Ayyam.

Al-Quds said the US State Department confirmed that there was nothing new in the issue of US aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA) after the paper had reported this week that the US has frozen all aid to the PA over allowance to families of prisoners.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also said in another top front page story from Gaza that the national campaign to bring down the “deal of the century” has been launched with a call for issuing a memorandum in different languages exposing the American deal.

It also highlighted on the front page the Israeli demolition of homes in East Jerusalem and the army raids in the West Bank city of Nablus.

Al-Quds also highlighted this matter on its front page and talked about other Israeli measures in the occupied territories, including confiscation of land in the Hebron area town of Bani Naim.

Al-Ayyam said the army crushed a protest against land takeover in Bani Naim.

The paper said Hamas delegation completed a visit to Russia saying Moscow is considering inviting the Palestinian factions for talks about reconciliation.

The three papers reported on the decisions by UNESCO in support of preserving the status quo in Jerusalem.

Al-Quds said UNRWA received pledges of additional aid to help it overcome its financial crisis.

It said calls were made to participate in the Friday protests at the border with Israel dubbed: “From Gaza to the West Bank: unity in blood and one destiny.”

It said the British royal prince, William, met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and will be in Ramallah on Wednesday and in East Jerusalem on Thursday.

The papers also reported on the situation in the Arab world, particularly Syria.
