Newspapers Review: Israeli army killing of Palestinian in West Bank village focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, June 7, 2018 (WAFA) – The killing of a 21-year-old Palestinian by Israeli forces in Nabi Saleh village, northwest of Ramallah, hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Thursday.

The dailies reported that Israeli forces “executed” Izzeddin Tamimi in cold blood and at point blank during a raid into Nabi Saleh village. He was reportedly hit by three live bullets.

Government spokesman Yousef al-Mahmoud was reported in al-Ayyam stating that the killing of Tamimi “confirms that Israeli military displays utter disregard to the bloodshed of Palestinians.”

He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that the crime “reminds many of the era of cannibalism.”

Furthermore, al-Quds said that Israeli forces detained a young Palestinian man after he allegedly attempted to ram his vehicle into soldiers to the north of Salfit.

It added that Israeli forces raided the central West Bank city of al-Bireh and the Hebron-district town of Beit Ummar, detaining a number of Palestinians.

Argentina’s decision to cancel its warm-up match against Israel, originally scheduled to take place in Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium for June 9, also continued to dominate the front page headlines in the dailies.

Palestine Football Association chief Jibril Rjoub was reported in al-Quds stating that the Argentine Football Association called off the game because it was intended to serve political ends.

He was also reported in al-Ayyam stating the decision constituted a victory for the values of sports that signals raising the red card for Israel.

The dailies added in this regard that the decision was welcomed by Palestinians while it stirred hysterical reaction in Israel.

Moreover, al-Quds said that US President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace team would go to the Middle East region soon.

It also reported Palestinian Muslim clerics in Jerusalem warning of an Israeli scheme to target flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the last ten days of Islam’s fasting month of Ramadan.

It said that Gaza civil servants were overburdened as a result of the crisis arising from the Palestinian Authority’s failure to fully pay their salaries.

It also reported that the Italian foreign ministry expressed concern over Israel’s decision to demolish the Palestinian Bedouin community of Khan al-Ahmar, east of Jerusalem.

It spotlighted a press conference for the families of Palestinians killed by Israeli snipers as they partook in the Great March of Return protests along Gaza’s eastern border.

Moreover, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the US State Department denying media reports that the US mulled undermining the status of the US Consulate General in Jerusalem to strengthen US ambassador to Israel David Friedman’s powers.

According to al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, President Mahmoud Abbas signed the Palestinian Authority’s accession to seven new international conventions and treaties.

They added an Israeli parole board has rejected a request by Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi, who received eight-month prison sentence for slapping an Israeli soldier in Nabi Saleh, for an early release.

Regionally, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Jordanian trade s pressed ahead with their protests against austerity measures and asserted their demands.

Al-Ayyam added that newly-appointed Premier Omar Razzaz pledged to start a dialogue with various political actors to devise a fair taxation system.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that British Premier Theresa May expressed concern to her Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu over the killing of Palestinians in Gaza.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, foreign and international affairs ministers of BRICS countries reiterated that “the status of Jerusalem is one of the final status issues to be defined in the context of negotiations between Israel and Palestine.”
