Israeli court remands Palestinian woman shot and injured in Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, May 28, 2018 (WAFA) – An Israeli court on Monday remanded in custody until the coming Sunday a Palestinian woman who was shot and injured by police on Sunday evening while walking near a railway track between Beit Hanina neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem and an Israeli settlement, according to Mofeed el-Haj, an attorney with the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.

He said the court held a session in the absence of Khawla Sbeih, who was getting treatment at an Israeli hospital from gun wounds she received the day before and where she is being held, and decided to keep her in custody until Sunday.

Sbeih, who was wearing the black Muslim garment, the niqab, that covers her body and face, was walking near the railway track when members of the Israeli police shot her in the leg after she failed to heed orders to stop, according to police claims.

Palestinians said they believe the woman was deaf, which explains why she did not stop when ordered to do so.

Police later said that even though no weapons of any kind were found in Sbeih’s possession, she was nevertheless detained until further investigation.
