Newspapers Review: President’s health condition, death of prisoner focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, May 21, 2018 (WAFA) – The health condition of President Mahmoud Abbas and the death of a Palestinian prisoner as a result of medical negligence in Israeli prisons hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Monday.

The dailies reported that Aziz Oweisat from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabal al-Mukaber, died at the Israeli hospital of Assaf Harofeh.

They added that Chairman of the Prisoners Affairs Committee Issa Qaraqe‘ held Israeli occupation authorities responsible for Oweisat’s death and demanded an international inquiry into his death.

The dailies also spotlighted the health condition of President Mahmoud Abbas, who was admitted for the third time in a week due to complications after minor surgery last week.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the medical director of Istishari Hospital in Ramallah Said Sarahneh saying the results of the medical tests were “good” and his medical condition was “reassuring.”

Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee Saeb Erekat was also reported in al-Ayyam stating that Abbas was in good health after he had additional tests done following the ear surgery.

Erekat was also reported in al-Quds urging US President Donald Trump’s senior advisor Jared Kushner to stop playing the game of placing the blame on Palestinians.

He was also reported: “Washington will remain isolated until it reverses its decision on Jerusalem.”

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam spotlighted a statement for Presidential Advisor for Foreign Affairs Nabil Shaath following the UN Human Rights Council’s vote to form an international committee to investigate Israel’s response to the Great March of Return protests along Gaza border.

Shaath was reported stating: “We have started to identify ]Israeli[ occupation leaders who will be tried at the International Criminal Court.”

According to al-Quds, Israeli troops raided Makased Hospital as well as several Jerusalem neighborhoods, sparking confrontations with Palestinians.

It added right-wing Israeli settlers continued to force their way into East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida explained that a total of 284 settlers forced their way into the Muslim holy site under the pretext of Jewish holidays.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, kites flown by Palestinian protestors set fire to fields in Israeli settlements in Gaza periphery.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that tens of thousands of Moroccans protested in Casablanca the relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem.

Al-Quds said that Washington was devising an initiative to solve the crises gripping the besieged Gaza Strip, driving the ire of the Palestinian leadership.

It added that Rabat suspended twin city plan with Guatemala over Jerusalem embassy move.

The dailies published a translation for a Haaretz report: In Israeli Maternity Wards, Jewish and Arab Segregation is the Default.

According to al-Ayyam, Israel announced its rejection of the UN Human Rights Council’s decision to establish a commission of inquiry into Gaza events.

It also reported Hamas describing Israel’s rejection of the UNHRC decision as “an evidence of Israel’s involvement in terrorism and murder.”

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli forces detained Mohammad Tamimi from his hometown of Nabi Saleh, northwest of Ramallah.

Al-Ayyam said scores of Palestinians rallied in Haifa, denouncing the trial of 19 people arrested on Friday during a previous rally in solidarity with Gaza.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Riyad Malki held a meeting with four Palestinian ambassadors whom he recalled recently for consultations.
