RAMALLAH, May 20, 2018 (WAFA) – Palestinian prisoner Aziz Oweisat, 53, from Jabal al-Mukaber neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem and who was serving a 30-year prison sentence, died on Sunday at an Israeli hospital, following serious deterioration on his health, reported the Palestinian Prisoner‘s Club (PPS), which held Israel totally responsible for his death.
The PPS accused the Israel Prison Services of medical neglect after Oweisat has suffered several complications following a severe lung failure and pneumonia.
He was admitted to a hospital in Israel where he was kept on life support machines until he was declared dead.
The PPS said the Israeli authorities kept Oweisat in prison and refused calls to release him to get medical treatment despite their knowledge of the seriousness of his health.
Oweisat was arrested in 2014 on charges of attempting to blow up a pipeline supplying gas to the settlement of Armon Hanatzif, built on expropriated Jabal al-Mukaber land.
At one point in May, Oweisat, who had health problems at his arrest, was severely beaten by prison guards for pouring hot water on a fellow prison guard, causing Oweisat serious injuries all over his face and body.
He had a heart attack on May 9 while he was kept at Ramle prison clinic. He was taken after that to Asaf Harofeh hospital in Israel where he remained until his death.
Reports said the Israel Prison Services was placed on high alert in the prisons following news of the death of Oweisat.
