Jordan: Decision to move US Embassy void and unilateral

AMMAN, May 14, 2018 (WAFA) – Jordan’s Minister of State for Information Affairs and Government Spokesman Mohammad Al-Momani Monday reiterated his country’s rejection of the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and described it as void and unilateral.

He said, “Jordan condemns the US decision and rejects it as most world countries. This was clear when 128 countries voted against the decision at the UN General Assembly and at the Security Council, which was also rejected by the majority of countries.”

Jordan stressed that moving the US embassy to Jerusalem comes in clear violation of international law and the United Nations’ charters, especially Security Council resolution 478, which all affirm that East Jerusalem is an occupied territory and that Jerusalem is a final status issue that should be determined through direct negotiations based on international resolutions.

He added that East Jerusalem is the capital of the State of Palestine as reaffirmed by King Abdullah II and is the “key to peace”.

Momani called on the international community to intensify efforts to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution to restore peace and security in the holy city of Jerusalem.
