Palestinian leadership prepares to take action against opening of US embassy in Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, May 14, 2018 (WAFA) – The Palestinian leadership is going to meet on Monday night to discuss action against the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem, Palestinian officials said on Monday.

Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and Foreign Minister Riyad Malki confirmed in two separate interviews with Voice of Palestine radio that the leadership meeting, which will be headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, is going to discuss actual steps to confront the US move.

Erekat said the meeting will discuss enforcing the recent decision by the Palestinian Central Council in response to the US step, adding that no Palestinian official is going to meet with any member of the current US administration because they have become part of the occupation and extremism in the region.

Maliki said action against the US administration’s decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem would continue on more than one track.

He said the leadership meeting will be followed by a meeting for the Arab League and many other steps at all levels, including at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Human Rights Council and the United Nations and its Security Council.

He stressed that the Palestinian leadership will go to the International Criminal Court and is preparing to submit files on the crimes committed by Israel.

Malki also said that the Israeli government is trying to portray the ceremony of the US embassy relocation from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as a historic event by exaggerating the announcement of the attendance list.

He downplayed reports that US President Donald Trump is going to announce his so-called “deal of the century” when he addresses the ceremonies for the opening of the embassy in Jerusalem on Monday.

“Trump is not going to announce anything and there are not going to be any surprises in his speech that should worry the Palestinian leadership,” he said, adding that the US administration is not interested in this deal because it is more concerned with Korea‘s nuclear capabilities, the Iranian issue and the situation in Syria while the Palestinian issue is no longer a top priority for the US administration.

Malki said that the list distributed by the Israeli Foreign Ministry regarding the attendees of the embassy opening ceremony is not correct and the number is actually much less than what has been announced, explaining that there are contacts with the countries that said they will attend to persuade them not to go.

He said that what Israel and the US administration are promoting regarding a large list of ambassadors and diplomats planning to attend the opening ceremony of the US embassy is not true.
