Newspapers review: Israeli airstrikes on Syria and Iranian retaliation focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, May 11, 2018 (WAFA) – The Israeli intensified airstrikes against Iranian military installations in Syria and Iranian retaliation hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Friday.

Al-Quds reported in bold that several capitals called on Israel and Iran to de-escalate the situation and resort to dialogue.

It also reported in bold that Damascus branded the Israeli airstrikes as a “new stage of Israeli aggression following the defeat of the terrorist instruments”.

Al-Ayyam also highlighted in red the missile confrontation between Israel and Iran over Syrian territories.

On the other hand, al-Hayat al-Jadida opted to spotlight in bold the Great March of Return protests on the seventh consecutive Friday.

It said that Palestinian protestors have declared “popular rage in support of Jerusalem” from Friday till May 15.

Al-Ayyam highlighted preparations for the Great March of Return protests, set to reach their crescendo on May 15, which marks the 70th anniversary of the Nakba (catastrophe), and described today’s protests along Gaza border as a “rehearsal” for upcoming Tuesday’s protests.

Al-Quds published a news analysis titled concerns over the potential implications of US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement.

Furthermore, al-Quds reported Gaza-based Health Ministry urging international organizations to intervene to salvage the health system in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Moreover, Israeli forces and settlers’ attacks against Palestinians and their property across the West Bank also dominated the front page headlines.

The dailies explained that Israeli forces blocked off the entrances of Hizma town, northeast of Jerusalem.

They added that Israeli occupation authorities notified Palestinians in Huwwara village, south of Nablus, of an order to seize their lands.

They also reported that Israeli bulldozers leveled Palestinian lands in Burin village, south of Nablus.

Highlighting tensions in East Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israeli settlers stepped their intrusions into the holy site, where they performed religious rituals.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida covered calls for Palestinians to rally at the historic Bab al-Rahma Islamic cemetery, next to East Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

The dailies said that Israeli troops crushed a Palestinian march marking 70 years of the Nakba in Bethlehem.

The march reportedly set off from Bethlehem city center to a hill overlooking the illegal settlement of Har Homa, north of Bethlehem.

According to al-Ayyam, Israeli forces conducted multiple overnight raids across the West Bank, detaining 12 Palestinians.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the detainees totaled eight and included brother of imprisoned teen Ahmed Tamimi and a senior Fatah leader.

Tamimi’s brother, Waed, 21, was detained during a raid into the Ramallah-district village of Nabi Saleh, while Adnan Gheith and his wife were detained from their home in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

Moreover, al-Quds reported Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh calling for holding inclusive elections.

It said the Palestinian NGOs Network briefed Arab and foreign diplomats on Israeli violations against Palestinians during a meeting in Ramallah.

It reported the EU missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah condemning the demolition and seizure of several EU-funded structures in four Palestinian communities in the Masafer Yatta area, south of Hebron, on May 2.

It also reported the mission calling on Israel to rebuild the structures in the same place.

According to al-Hay al-Jadida, Israeli occupation authorities have banned Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Ekrima Sabri from entering the West Bank for four months.

It said that President Mahmoud Abbas met Arab ambassadors and representatives of the Union of Palestinian Communities in Latin America during his visit to Chile.

Finally, it reported Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun stating that Christian presence could not be conceived if it diminishes in Palestine.
