Newspapers Review: Israeli incursion into Jenin, outcomes of Al-Azhar‘s Jerusalem Conference focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, January 19, 2018 (WAFA) – Israeli forces’ military incursion into the northern West Bank city of Jenin on Thursday, during which a Palestinian was killed and four homes were demolished, as well as the outcomes of the Al-Azhar‘s Jerusalem Conference dominated the front page headlines in the dailies on Friday.

The three dailies; al-Quds, Al-Ayyam, and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on the Israeli military incursion into Jenin, during which a Palestinian man suspected of being behind an attack earlier in the month near Nablus in the northern West Bank that left an Israeli settler dead, was killed, and others injured.

The dailies said four homes were demolished in the Jenin operation. All three dailies printed pictures of the homes demolished during the military incursion into Jenin’s town of Burqin.

Al-Ayyam said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with his ministers, praised the Jenin operation.

The three dailies also reported on the outcomes of the International Conference in Support of Jerusalem, which was hosted by al-Azhar in Cairo.

Al-Quds read: Al-Azhar international conference confirms that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the independent Palestinian state and rejects latest US decision [recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel].

Al-Ayyam, and al-Hayat al-Jadida said the conference declared 2018 as the "year of Jerusalem".

The two dailies said US President Donald Trump’s decision on Jerusalem as capital of Israel  is just ink on paper.

On a different subject, al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Erekat, the secretary general of the PLO Executive Committee and a former chief negotiator, as calling on the European Union to curb the Israeli occupation’s policies and to support UNRWA, following the US decision to withhold about half of the initial aid due for the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees.

Meanwhile, al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds dailies said President Mahmoud Abbas is set to travel to Brussels on Monday to meet with Foreign ministers of the 28 EU member states, to discuss the latest development regarding Jerusalem, particularly US declaration of Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

Both dailies said Abbas is set to participate in the African Union Summit scheduled to take place from 22nd to 29th January 2018, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
