Newspapers Review: PLO’s vote to suspend recognition of Israel focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, January 16, 2018 (WAFA) – The Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Central Council vote to call for the suspension of recognition of Israel hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Tuesday.

The dailies reported that the Central Council assigned the PLO’s Executive Committee to suspend the recognition of Israel until it recognizes the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.

They also reported the council decided that the interim period stipulated in the agreements signed in the 1993 Oslo Accords besides to other agreements signed in Cairo and Washington were no longer valid.

They also reported the council assigned the PLO’s Executive Committee to halt security coordination with Israel and break away from the relation of economic dependence on Israel as enshrined in the Paris Economic Protocol.

President Mahmoud Abbas’ spokesperson, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that the strength of the Palestinian position on Jerusalem has exposed the conspiracy against Jerusalem and foiled the idea of “free normalization” with Israel.

The killing of a Palestinian young man by Israeli forces in the northern West Bank district of Qalqilia also dominated the front page headlines in the dailies.

The dailies reported that Israeli forces killed a Palestinian in Jayyous town, east of Qalqilia. Ahmad Salim, 24, reportedly succumbed to his wounds after he was critically injured by Israeli forces during clashes in Jayyous.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Israeli forces detained a number of Palestinians and injured others during multiple raids that triggered clashes in the West Bank.

Al-Quds added that Israeli forces seized the recordings of surveillance cameras installed on Palestinian homes and stores in the northern West Bank.

It also reported that Israeli forces delivered stop-construction orders for a mosque and a residential room in Hebron-district town of Yatta.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli forces injured six Palestinians during clashes in Burqin town, west of Jenin.

Highlighting the situation in flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, al-Quds reported that Israeli police have disrupted the restoration works at the Marawani mosque as a result of leaks from rainwater.

It reported director of the Department of Islamic Endowments (Waqf) in Jerusalem Azzam al-Khatib explaining that Israeli police have denied the entry of renovation materials and electricity cables to the Dome of the Rock.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry stating: “There is no alternative to the solution of two states.”

Al-Ayyam also reported European Union High Representative Federica Mogherini stating that there was no alternative to the two-state solution with Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and Palestine.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that an autopsy for Ibrahim Abu Thurayeh, the handicapped Palestinian shot dead in Gaza last month, proved that the Israeli forces were responsible for his killing.

Al-Quds reported that al-Azhar is set to hold a conference in support of Jerusalem.

It added the Israeli watchdog, Yesh Din, has petitioned the Israeli High Court on behalf of Palestinian landowners from Ramallah district villages of Ras Karkar and Deir Ammar, demanding that settlers’ incursions on village lands be removed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that Palestinians have made concessions for years without receiving anything in return.

He was also reported in al-Ayyam stating Russia understands Palestinian anger at US President Donald Trump.

Commissioner of the UNRWA Pierre Krahenbuhl was reported in al-Ayyam pledging that UNRWA would continue to assist Palestinian refugees despite US threats to cut off funding to the UN agency.

According to al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, an Israeli military court has extended the detention of 16-year-old Ahed Tamimi for 48 hours.

Al-Ayyam said the Palestinian private sector has declared a general commercial strike in protest of the economic decline in the besieged Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
