Newspapers review: Israeli army‘s killing of two Palestinians focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, January 12, 2018 (WAFA) – The killing of two Palestinians by Israeli forces in the West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip hit the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Friday.

The dailies reported that Israeli forces killed two Palestinians east of al-Bureij camp in central Gaza and in the Nablus-district village of Iraq Burin.

Amir Abu Musaed, 16, was shot dead by Israeli forces as the latter opened fire at a borderline demonstration to protest US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Moreover, Ali Kaddus, 16, was killed by Israeli forces near a makeshift checkpoint at the entrance of Tell village, south of Nablus, as he stood among a group of Palestinians near the entrance to his village, which had been blocked off by Israeli troops with cement blocks.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added that Israeli forces shot and seriously wounded three other Palestinians when they cracked down on an anti-Trump protest, east of al-Bureij camp, near the border fence with Gaza.

According to al-Quds, Israeli authorities have seized scores of dunums of Palestinian land belonging to Burin School in Nablus district.

The dailies highlighted the situation in the northern West Bank district of Nablus following the killing of an Israeli Jewish settler on Tuesday near Havat Gilad Israeli settlement outpost.

Al-Quds reported in this regard that Israeli Jewish settlers continued to block streets and attack Palestinian-registered vehicles with stones in the Nablus district and the Jordan Valley, while al-Hayat al-Jadida said that settlers attacked Palestinians near Nablus and Qalqiliya.

Al-Ayyam reported that Israeli authorities have stepped up repressive measures against Palestinians to the south of Nablus.

Furthermore, the dailies reported that Israeli occupation authorities have approved the construction of 1,100 new settler units in 20 settlements across the West Bank.

Al-Quds explained that some 350 of the settler units received final approval, while al-Ayyam noted that the construction of 651 units was still in the tendering process.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli authorities have effectively “buried the two-state solution with settlement construction”.

The dailies added that France and Britain condemned Israel’s decision to advance the construction of the 1,100 settler units in the West Bank.

Regarding the upcoming meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Central Council, al-Quds said Hamas tends to boycott the meeting while the Islamic Jihad movement won’t attend it.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported President Mahmoud Abbas’ Office stressing that statements made by PLO Executive Committee member Ahmad Majdalani on the US ultimate deal to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict did not represent the official Palestinian position.

According to al-Quds, Palestinian institutions in Hebron, notably Hebron Municipality and Hebron Rehabilitation Committee, has petitioned the Israeli Supreme Court against the Israeli military’s decision to expand municipal powers of illegal settlers in Hebron city.

Al-Quds reported that the Norwegian Refugee Council has warned against the consequences of cutting off funding to the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

Al-Ayyam reported on the Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi stating that enabling UNRWA to continue to provide its services to Palestinian refugees was an international responsibility.

Al-Quds said the Higher Council of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fatwa) issued a religious decree prohibiting leaking Palestinian land to enemies.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that the Middle East Council of Churches supports the Palestinian question.

Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah was reported in al-Quds stating that Jerusalem and refugees were final status issues and red lines that Palestinians would not renounce.

Presidential Spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudenieh was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that the coming period demands steadfastness and adherence to the national constants, particularly East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state.

In addition, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Abbas’ meeting with the Dutch Foreign Minister Halbe Zijlstra at the presidential headquarter in Ramallah.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli forces conducted multiple overnight raids across the West Bank, detaining 29 Palestinians.
