Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight reactions to Likud decision

RAMALLAH, January 2, 2018 (WAFA) – Reactions including that of President Mahmoud Abbas in response to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party resolution urging legislators to effectively annex the West Bank hit the front page headlines in the Palestinian Arabic dailies on Tuesday.

Abbas was reported in al-Ayyam vowing to make “important decisions to protect the Palestinian people.”

He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating these decisions would include pursuing Israel in international tribunals, accession to UN organizations and holding Israel accountable for its grave and systematic violations.

He was also reported in the dailies stating that the Likud’s resolution “could not have been taken without the unconditional support of the US administration.”

On the other hand, al-Quds reported that an Israeli soldier was injured during clashes with Palestinians in the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

It added a Palestinian was detained by Israeli forces purportedly after attempting to stab soldiers in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Israeli police injured several Palestinians during a raid that triggered clashes in East Jerusalem neighborhood of al-Issawiya.

Al-Ayyam also reported that a number of Palestinians suffocated from tear gas during clashes with Israeli forces at Gaza’s border near Khuzaa, east of Khan Younis.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli bulldozers infiltrated Gaza borders and razed farmlands east of al-Qarara town, north of Khan Younis.

The dailies spotlighted detention raids and al-Ayyam said that Israeli forces detained 15 Palestinians during multiple overnight raids across the West Bank.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported that Israeli forces delivered a demolition order for the family home of a Palestinian detainee in the Jenin-district town of Qabatiya.

The dailies said US Vice President Mike Pence have delayed his visit to Israel and Egypt once again.

According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Israeli parliament, the Knesset, has approved a bill which would disconnect Palestinian neighborhoods from East Jerusalem.

They added the bill would effectively restrict any decision on “relinquishing” parts of Jerusalem to the Palestinian Authority.

The dailies added an Israeli military court has extended the detention of Ahed Tamimi, a Palestinian teen filmed confronting and slapping an Israeli soldier, and her mother, Nariman, for eight more days.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida explained that Israeli occupation authorities have levied 12 charges against Tamimi and five charges against her mother.
