RAMALLAH, December 29, 2017 (WAFA) – Renewed demonstrations against the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and in support of imprisoned Palestinian teen dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Friday.
Al-Quds reported that a number of Palestinians sustained injuries with live rounds and scores of others suffocated when Israeli forces cracked down on peaceful demonstrations that evolved into clashes across the West Bank.
The dailies added that Israeli troops and Jewish settlers attacked Burin High School in the northern West Bank district of Nablus, injuring several students and causing several cases of tear gas suffocation.
They added that Israeli forces delivered demolition orders for several Palestinian residential structures, a mosque and a school in the Hebron-district town of Yatta and East Jerusalem neighborhood of al-Issawiya.
Furthermore, al-Ayyam said that Israeli forces conducted multiple overnight raids across the West Bank, detaining 21 Palestinians. According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, a total of 23 Palestinians were detained.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that an Israeli military court extended the detention of 16-year-old Palestinian teen Ahed Tamimi and her mother for further five days.
They added that Tamimi was awarded the Annual Arab Creativity Prize by the Lebanese Cultural Forum in Paris.
Al-Quds said the Arab Parliament, who convened at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo, stressed the importance of holding an emergency Arab summit to recruit efforts for ending the Israeli occupation.
According to al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida, President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack in St. Petersburg that left dozens injured as “terrorist”.
Highlighting a conference by Palestinian students’ parents, al-Quds said students’ parents called for concerted efforts to confront Israel’s attempts to impose the Israeli curriculum on Palestinian schools in East Jerusalem.
Highlighting a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), al-Quds said Israeli occupation authorities demolished 418 homes and displaced 659 Palestinians in the West Bank in 2017.
According to al-Ayyam, scores of Israeli Jewish settlers forced their way into East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida announcing that Palestine has started to submit instruments of accession to 22 international treaties and agreements.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that member of Fatah Central Committee Azzam al-Ahmad met with Egyptian officials in an effort to overcome the obstacles to implementing the reconciliation agreement with Hamas.
