Classes suspended in East Jerusalem neighborhood to protest Israeli police brutality

JERUSALEM, October 17, 2017 (WAFA) – The Parents Committee in the Israeli occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiyeh suspended on Tuesday classes in all schools to protest Israeli police brutality against students that left one in critical condition, according to WAFA correspondent.

He said the Parents Committee decided in a meeting on Monday night to suspend classes in all schools starting Tuesday and until further notice.

The parents say police regularly attack students when they leave their schools the latest was on Monday when police fired tear gas and rubber-coated metal bullets at students from a short distance causing three injuries, one of them reported in critical condition and was transferred to a hospital in Israel where he underwent surgery to remove his spleen.

Police set up roadblocks at an area of Issawiyeh where most of the schools are located and search students and their schoolbags when they are on their way to school causing delays.

The heavy police presence and harassment normally increase tension in the area and often lead to confrontations between police and students.
