Arab follow-up committee says four new Israeli Supreme Court judges tilt balance to the right

RAMALLAH, February 23, 2017 (WAFA) – The appointment of four new conservative judges to the Israeli Supreme Court will tilt its decision to the right and may undermine its status, the head of the Arab Follow-up committee in Israel, Mohammad Barka, said on Thursday.

He told WAFA that the appointment of the four new judges is a ‘turning point in the operation of the High Court, which anyhow was  not totally democratic, but is now going to shift more toward the extreme right wing groups and the settlers party, the Jewish Home.”

The Israeli papers said three of the judges were considered conservative and one of them is a settler and lives in an illegal West Bank settlement.

The papers quoted right-wing Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked saying that history was made in Israel with the new appointments.

“Today we made  history,” she was quoted as saying indicating that she succeeded in tilting the balance in the court to the right.
