Official: Israel withheld news on death of prisoner for 24 hours

RAMALLAH, February 11, 2017 (WAFA) – The Israeli authorities held news on death of a prisoner for 24 hours which leaves question marks regarding the reason for that, a Palestinian official said on Saturday.

Issa Qaraqi, head of the Prisoners’ Affairs Commission, said on Voice of Palestine that Muhammad Jallad died on Thursday night but his death was only announced on Friday afternoon, "which leaves questions about this matter."

Jallad, 24, from Tulkarm in the north of the West Bank, was shot and critically injured after he allegedly attempted to stab soldiers in Hawwara, south of Nablus, on November 9.

He was taken to the Israeli Belinson hospital where he remained in critical condition until his death on Thursday.

Qaraqi said a complaint was filed with the Israeli authorities against keeping Jallad’s death secret for 24 hours and demanded to turn over his body to his family for burial in his hometown.

He said in addition to his critical wounds, Jallad was also suffering from the deadly Lymphoma cancer.

With the death of Jallad, the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since October 2015 reached 283, most of them killed after alleged attacks.
